It is true that professional carpet cleaning can cost you a lot and it is not advisable that you call the cleaners every time you got a spot on your carpet or you’ll go bankrupt soon enough. There are things that you can do to keep your carpets in tip-top form.

As a matter of fact, you only need to get professional carpet cleaning Chattanooga every six months or so. In the meantime, you can do regular vacuuming on your carpet. There are also several things that you can do if you need to remove stains on the carpet.

Carpet Cleaning Tips and Tricks

If you’re the DIY type of person who wants to try something out before calling the professionals, here are some tips that you may find helpful. But these tips can no way replace the services of a professional.

1. Vacuum your carpet at least twice a week.

Twice a week vacuuming is necessary for the heavy traffic areas in your home. For the ones with the least traffic, you can possibly get away with once a week vacuuming. By vacuuming your carpets regularly, you’re actually prolonging its lifespan. Vacuuming prevents the buildup of dirt, debris, and all other gritty particles that can damage the fibers of the carpet.

2. Divide your floor into four quadrants when vacuuming.

It’s easier to vacuum the floor if it is divided accordingly. Cover one quadrant before going to the next. Take your time when vacuuming, especially if you have plush carpeting. Such types of carpets have dirt fully embedded into the fibers. Go over every section a few times to remove dirt and dust.

3. Remove spills immediately.

If there’s a spill on the carpet, attend to it immediately scrape or blot the entire area before you apply any type of cleaning solution. Remove all the spills and test the cleaning solution on the farthest side of the carpet to ensure that the cleaner won’t cause discoloration. Don’t rub on the spill too much as that will only make the problem worse.

4. Raise carpet depression by steaming.

Sometimes, parts of the carpet get depressed due to the heaviness of the furniture above it. If you have to move that furniture and the depressions look unsightly, use a steam iron to do the trick. Hold the iron close enough so that the steam reaches the carpet. But be careful that it doesn’t touch the carpet or it may melt or burn, especially if it has synthetic fibers. After steaming, scrape the edges using a spoon or coin.

5. Call the professionals.

If you have done all the tips above and the problem didn’t go away, it should be time to call the professionals. Get them working on your carpet ahead of the regular schedule so you don’t have to deal with the problem and make it worse. Some damage become permanent if left ignored for far too long. Think of the services of professional carpet cleaners as investments that allow you to prolong the lifespan of your carpet.
